Productivity’s Respite

Gee, and with a whole week between games, one would think that I could get a lot more done than I actually did. Go figure.

After some of the best tournament basketball games in history, I was faced with a whole week to get actual work done. I would love to say that the excitement of Sunday’s games carried over and kept me too giddy to properly work on this website, but that would be a lie. I was far too busy trying to appear productive while catching up on a weekend’s worth of reading put off by my trip home for Easter. On the bright side, I did get a lot of work done last night at the office making IE cooperate with my CSS. I’ve got a write-up brewing in my head right now on the quirks I found. Best of all, tonight the games are back on and productivity takes a nap until tomorrow.

You know, I hate to say this, but I’d almost forgotten how much fun it is to watch sporting events with my father and brother. We get so worked up and into games that mean essentially nothing to us between teams that mean absolutely nothing to us that I just can’t help but laugh at the situation. Throw in our crazy tournament brackets, unexpected upsets, Final Four-wrecking losses, and “March Madness” doesn’t even begin to describe the scene at the Schou house when all three of us are around. I love it.

So, brackets… I had this to say in my last post on this subject:

> Even more improbably, I’m still leading our little “SJU alumns and friends” pool. Year after year, I’ve proven that I can’t pick the winners of NFL games to save my life. Suddenly, I’m not making an ass of myself picking the winners of NCAA games. I have no doubt whatsoever that this will change in a few days’ time. I’ve got my red Sharpie ready to go…

Stupid Sharpie. There were 12 games played over the last weekend. I correctly picked the winners of them in 7 games. I had six possible Elite Eight victors and got all six of them right. Unfortunately, two of my Final Four teams had been eliminated in the first two rounds, so I only had two more alive. Kentucky went down. That means that while my overall percentage was nice, my results, frankly, sucked. I have one team left: Illinois.

On a personal level I was ecstatic to see Michigan State beat Kentucky (I live in the upper-Midwest. Go Big Ten!), but UK was my other Final Four team after Kansas and Wake Forest went down in flames. There are three games this weekend. I could theoretically get two of three correct, but as I only have one team left of these four, my odds aren’t great. Throw in the fact that the the *only* way I can win our pool is if Michigan State beats UNC and I’m most likely looking at a typical “Joel can’t pick worth shit” result. Cool. All *is* right with the world.

Last, but not least, here are quick links to the brackets after last weekend, post-second round, and following the first round.

Go Illini! Go Spartans!
