On Portfolios

I added three more websites to my portfolio today and it got me thinking about the compilation and philosophy of portfolios. What’s the best way to pick your pieces? Quality? Quantity? Both?

There are three new websites in my websites portfolio as of a few hours ago. These three sites are relatively minor, however. Two of them are really mini-sites and it is quite apparent that they use nearly identical templates. The third one was a collaborative effort with John Whittet and his Basseq Technologies. So, all things considered, these three sites are small pieces, but are still sites that I want to include in my portfolio. It wasn’t a fast or easy decision, though. I pondered for a long time whether or not I should add these. In the end, however, I decided that I had to keep them. But should the decision have been that hard?

Frustration Has a Banner Day

headline image for “Frustration Has a Banner Day”This banner is driving me mad!

Time, file size, time, failed vendors, time, and pressure combine to make this particular project a nightmare. I need more time!

Let me begin by pointing out the fact that just a few weeks ago, a new 1.8GHz iMac G5 with 1.5GB of RAM replaced the old 450MHz PowerMac G4 with 1.25GB of RAM on my desk at work. This iMac has been an absolute joy to useand to abuse. I’ve been throwing more multi-tasking at the iMac in the past two weeks than I ever did at that old PowerMac. The results, so far, have been spectacular. I’ve been extremely happy with the iMac’s ability to handle some very, very large files. The files themselves, however…

Keeping Promises II: IE Quirks

Posted on 15th April, 2005 at 12:09am by joel

I discovered some really interesting Internet Explorer quirks while working on this site about two weeks ago. I made a note of them and promised to share the love (and frustration).

There isn’t a serious standards-focused web developer on the planet who hasn’t had irritating troubles with Internet Explorer. We’ve finally reached a point where IE on the Mac is largely irrelevant thanks to Safari and Firefox. Versions of IE on Windows older than 6 are also marginalized for the most part. However, even though IE6 offers decent standards support, it is filled with behavior from the bizarre to the downright idiotic (and everything in between, of course). I could list dozens upon dozens of these issues, and such bugs as “double margin” and “peek-a-boo” are just two well-named examples.

Happy Birthday!

Posted on 5th April, 2005 at 8:01pm by joel

headline image for “Happy Birthday!”I wish… I had gotten more done.

Does it make me a bigger geek if my site and my person both share the same birthday? That’s right, I’ve finally launched a personal site and I picked the finest day of the year to do it.

If we completely ignore the fact that I’m writing this post at roughly 7:00pm on April 5th, then we can all celebrate the official (though rather “soft”) launching of joelschou.com as well as my birthday—both of which took place yesterday. I promised myself that I would put this forever-in-development website online on 4/4, whether it was done or not. And I did. And it isn’t even close. Whoops.

Productivity’s Respite

headline image for “Productivity’s Respite”Please make the bleeding stop!

Gee, and with a whole week between games, one would think that I could get a lot more done than I actually did. Go figure.

After some of the best tournament basketball games in history, I was faced with a whole week to get actual work done. I would love to say that the excitement of Sunday’s games carried over and kept me too giddy to properly work on this website, but that would be a lie. I was far too busy trying to appear productive while catching up on a weekend’s worth of reading put off by my trip home for Easter. On the bright side, I did get a lot of work done last night at the office making IE cooperate with my CSS. I’ve got a write-up brewing in my head right now on the quirks I found. Best of all, tonight the games are back on and productivity takes a nap until tomorrow.
